Many people are unfamiliar with what actually takes place during a worship service in a chapel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Research also shows that there are many people who feel that they are not welcomed inside an LDS chapel to worship with Latter-day Saints to be able to observe for themselves that Mormon worship is focused on the Lord Jesus Christ.
This is often the basis for misunderstandings among communities where Latter-day Saints live and leads many to believe that the close-knit ties of the Latter-day Saint community is both clannish and secretive. Part of this misconception may be caused by the differences between worship services in LDS chapels and temple worship. All are invited to attend services in LDS chapels, but only those members of The Church of Jesus Christ who are deemed worthy and hold a valid temple recommend are permitted to enter the sacred temple – the House of the Lord.

Many years ago I had an experience in the St. Louis Temple that changed my perspective on life in an extraordinary and unforgettable way. Before I share this story with you, I would like to explain a little about temples. Members of the LDS Church are often confused with polygamists and other fundamentalists who are not connected with The Church of Jesus Christ. Because of this misconception, many people think that Mormon women are forced to stay at home, be submissive, and bear children.
The truth is, polygamy has not been practiced by Mormons for nearly 150 years. Mormon women are encouraged to gain an education and to pursue personal interests. Couples are encouraged to have children, because Mormon doctrine teaches that the family is an eternal unit and that a good part of our purpose on the earth is to bring more of God’s children into the world and raise them in... When people talk about the Mormons, they are referring to members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. “Mormons” has become a nickname given to Latter-day Saints by people of other faiths. When people discuss Mormons, though, it is quite remarkable how the conversation quickly falls into stereotypes of old-fashioned lifestyle, polygamy, and gated communities. However, most, if not all of the accusations put forward against the “Mormon” Church and its members simply do not hold water. The truth is that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are just like any other normal people with ambitions who work to become accomplished individuals in their respective communities. They dress modestly according to fashions of modern cultures in which they reside. They are some of the best neighborhood friends, schoolmates, and co-workers in a community.
Many Latter-day Saints can be found in government... Read the rest of this article »
